USPSA separates competitors by equipment into different divisions. Competitors are further divided by skill level into classes.

While you can compare scores between divisions you are only directly competing against others in your same division and class.

USPSA

See the complete USPSA rule book here.

What division should I shoot?

For new shooters, unless you bring a revolver or single stack 1911, we suggest Limited since this requires less gear and fewer reloads.

Division Capacity Min Caliber Notes
Open 170mm Magazine 9mm/.38 Race guns with compensators and red dot optics
Limited 140mm Magazine 9mm Similar to Open but no compensators or optics are allowed
Production 10+1 9mm Common service pistols fit here. Glock 34, CZs, M&P Pros
Single Stack 8+1 or 10+1 9mm 1911s
Revolver 6 or 8 9mm
What are the Classifications?

The USPSA classes are D, C, B, A, M (Master), GM (Grand Master). USPSA members will receive a classification after shooting 4 or more classifier stages.

What is minor/major?

Don't worry about this if you are new. Just shoot accurately and safely.

I really want to know about minor vs major

Minor and Major categories are determined by the Power Factor (PF) of your ammo (Power Factor is feet per second * weight in grains / 1,000). In essense if you shoot stronger ammo you are rewarded with a slight scoring advantage. In revolver and single stack you are allowed to have 2 more rounds if you shoot minor. Production is always minor.
